Biodiesel Production

U.S. Production

  • 2004 - 30 million gallons - NBB
  • 2005 - 75 million gallons - NBB
  • 2006 - 150 million gallons
  • 2007 - estimated to reach 300 million gallons

Oils vs. Fats

Although chemically similar, a fat is solid or semi-solid at 'room' temperature, while an oil remains liquid. However, some oils such as palm oil and coconut oil are liquids in the hot countries where they are produced, but semi-solid in a colder climate.

Oil Content

The following table lists popular oil-producing crops (feedstocks) and their theoretical yields:

Biodiesel Production Basics

  1. Pick a feedstock
  2. Collect and gather feedstock
  3. De-gum and PH balance the fat or oil
  4. Remove all water content
  5. Titrate to find percentage of Free Fatty Acids
  6. Heat to 130º - 200º
  7. Mix in methoxide
  8. Agitate for 3 hours
  9. Let settle for 12-24 hours
  10. Flash evaporate the excess methanol
  11. Rinse product with water
  12. Flash evaporate any water
  13. Filter 5 micron
  14. Test for ASTM D-6751
